Press Release

Smart mover: Dürr unveils its new painting robot

Bietigheim-Bissingen, October 24, 2016 - Dürr has unveiled a world first for fully automated automotive painting in the form of the new EcoRP E043i robot. While conventional painting robots work with six motion axes, the new model has a seventh axis. This makes the Dürr robot an unrivaled mover and opens up new options and cost-cutting potentials. The third generation of Dürr robots, unveiled on October 24, is controlled using the new EcoRCMP 2 smart robot controller.

  • The world’s first 7-axis painting robot
  • Greater flexibility, lower costs in automotive paint shops
  • Smart controller for connected Industry 4.0 processes

The seventh axis enables rotational movements of the robot base. This makes the robot more flexible and substantially extends its working range. As a result, it is better able to reach many sections of the automotive body, particularly when it comes to interior painting. Since the robot is highly mobile, it is possible to dispense with a traversing rail in the paint booth in many cases. With robot designs up till now the rail has been necessary so that the robot can move up and down parallel to the body. Its omission reduces the investment costs and the space requirement. The latter is particularly important when upgrading existing paint shops. Dürr is also offering a new generation of handling robots to complement the new painting robot. These open doors and hoods on the body for interior painting.

Thanks to the new controller, the EcoRP E043i follows more even uniform spray paths – an important factor in achieving reproducible quality in mass production painting. The smart controller brings together a large number of sensors and actuators, communicates with higher-level maintenance and control systems and is cloud-enabled.

Dürr AG’s CEO Ralf W. Dieter: “The new robot package from Dürr complies with all the requirements specified for connected Industry 4.0 production. Our customers will not only achieve perfect painting results with it, but also always have all the data available in digital format. They can therefore optimize their production operations and identify at an early stage when maintenance is required. As a result, we are offering an integrated smart factory concept for the paint application process.”
