Press Release

We’re rolling! The “Dürr Challenge” makes its premiere

Bietigheim-Bissingen, November 25, 2013 - As a technology company, Dürr needs young, qualified professionals. That’s why the mechanical and plant engineering company is investing in university marketing. An innovative way of addressing young talent made its premiere on Friday. Together with the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, Dürr presented awards to three teams of students for their short films at Ludwigsburg’s Caligari arthouse cinema. As part of the “Dürr Challenge” competition, the company had selected the three teams among numerous applicants and sent them to Detroit, São Paulo, and Shanghai. Their task was to create documentaries on life and work in the three cities.

With its “Dürr Challenge”, Dürr is raising its profile as an employer at German universities. The competition was held for the first time this year. “The Dürr Challenge is a unique format for raising our profile further and targeting students in an innovative way”, says Klaus Achtelik, Head of Corporate Human Resources. “We are competing with other employers. It is therefore important to introduce young people to the company at an early stage.” The “Dürr Challenge”, during which students of various subjects travel abroad on their own initiative, focuses on three aspects which are important at Dürr: flexibility, the ability to work in a team, and intercultural skills.

At the award ceremony, the three short films were watched by almost 200 Dürr employees. Yves Lambert, Production Management Third-Party Funds at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, recognized the high level of technical and dramaturgic skill. During production the teams, each consisting of four students, were supported by young directors of the Film Academy. The costs for the “Dürr Challenge” were borne by Dürr.

The five-strong jury, which consisted of Yves Lambert, two Dürr employees, and two students, awarded first prize to the Shanghai team. Their film successfully captured different facets of life in the Chinese mega-city: old and young, traditional and modern, work and leisure, a wedding couple in the street. The five students received a total of € 2,500 in prize money for their work. The other two documentaries were also impressive. The Detroit team documented life in the US car city from the perspective of a taxi driver. The film about São Paulo focused on contrasts in the streetscape of the largest South American city.
