Three metropolises and huge emotions: “Dürr Challenge” student film contest held for the third time

Bietigheim-Bissingen, November 24, 2015 - As the lights go out, the tension mounts: seeing their own film on a huge silver screen for the very first time, accompanied by numerous viewers, is an exciting and emotional highlight for every movie maker. It goes without saying that the 15 contestants of the Dürr Challenge were excited when they presented their works before an audience of about 200 at the Ludwigsburg Caligari cinema. This already was the third time that the machinery and plant construction company Dürr sent students from all over Germany out into the world. Part of their luggage included camera equipment and a mission: shooting a video sequence on the subject “Create Emotions”. The world this year comprised Singapore, Madrid and Toronto. The students were once again accompanied by three up-and-coming directors from the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy. Three outstanding films originated in the process. In the end, the Singapore team stole the show.

What was new this time was that the three film teams did not only take home documentary films from their travels. Because of the different approaches used, it was not easy for the jury to select a winner. The jury included Yves Alain Lambert from the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy as well as four Company representatives. The winning film “Call me back” from Singapore delivered a compelling performance – not only for its first-class craftsmanship, but also for its ingenious narrative structure: members of the audience hear 15 messages saved to an answering machine. The messages are accompanied by images first of all showing the joie de vivre and liveliness of the South East Asian metropolis but then becoming increasingly dismal and sad – in line with the messages heard on the mailbox,” says jury member and laudatory speaker Claudia Sebulke (who is currently undergoing a trainee program at Dürr) in justifying her vote.

“The contest is unique in Germany and a key measure for Dürr to get into conversation with students of all disciplines,” explains Paul Eckert, Head of Personnel Development at Dürr. And the context is the perfect match for the corporate culture of the plant and machinery construction company. After all, in everyday work situations at Dürr, own initiative, innovation and intercultural understanding are key factors.

“Although we’ve meanwhile held our Dürr Challenge for the third time, I am once again surprised today how creative and, above all, professional the results of the three film teams are. And this is despite the fact that our contestants don’t actually have anything to do with creating videos as part of their studies,” says Klaus Achtelik, Group HR Director at Dürr, in summing up.
